I’ll Tell My Ma

I’ll tell my ma when I come home

The boys won’t leave the girls alone

The pull my hair and they stole my comb

But that’s alright till I get home

She is handsome, she is pretty

She is the belle of Belfast city

Please won’t you tell me who is she

Albert Mooney says he loves her

All the boys are fighting for her

They rap at the door

And they ring on the bell

Saying “Oh my true love, are you well”.

Out she comes as white as snow

Rings on her fingers, bells on her toes

Old Johnny Murray says she’ll die

If she doesn’t get the fella

with the roving eye.

Let the wind and the rain and the

Hail blow high

And the snow come travelling

Through the sky

She’s as nice as apply pie,

She’ll get her own lad

Bye and bye

When she gets a lad of her own

She won’t tell her Ma till

Till she gets home

Let them all come as they will

Sure it’s Albert Mooney she loves still

Traditional

One of the most popular ‘foot-stomping’ Irish folk songs over the generations.

Originating in Belfast as a street-song, it  reached a worldwide audience through the singing of the Clancy Brothers during the ’70’s.

This version was recorded in Wild Island Studios, near Abbey, Loughrea with lots of fun and shenanigans, giving it a more homely ‘live’ feel,. Thanks gang!
